DG DEFIS – Defence Industry and Space
The Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DEFIS) leads the European Commission’s activities in the Defence Industry and Space sector.
In the area of Defence Industry, DEFIS is in charge of upholding the competitiveness and innovation of the European Defence industry by ensuring the evolution of an able European defence technological and industrial base.
In the area of Space DG DEFIS is in charge of implementing the EU Space programme consisting of the European Earth Observation Programme (Copernicus), the European Global Navigation Satellite System (Galileo) and the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS).
European Health and Digital Executive Agency
The Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) will implement the following programmes (with indicative budget):
- EU4Health programme: €4.7 billion (out of the total budget of €5.3 billion)
- Horizon Europe: Pillar II, Cluster 1: Health: €4.1 billion
- Single Market Programme: Food safety: health for humans, animals and plants along the food chain and better training for safer food: €1.3 billion
- Digital Europe Programme: €0.8 billion
- Connecting Europe Facility: Digital: €1.7 billion
- Horizon Europe: Pillar II, cluster 4: Digital, Industry and Space: €5.6 billion
Research Executive Agency (REA)
The European Research Executive Agency is a funding body for research and innovation. It manages EU research grants. Mandated by the European Commission to support the EU Research and Innovation policy, the European Research Executive Agency (REA), funds high-quality research and innovation projects that generate knowledge for the benefit of society. The REA also manages promotion measures concerning agricultural products.
Accordingly, the REA’s responsibilities are to:
- Manage research projects supported under Horizon Europe, the world’s largest framework programme for research and innovation to date, running from 2021 to 2027.
- Manage research projects supported under Horizon 2020, the previous framework programme for research and innovation (2014-2020).
- Implement the European Union programmes Promotion of agricultural products and Research Fund for Coal and Steel, as well as ongoing projects funded under the EU’s 2014-2020 budget.
- Assist funding and tender applicants, beneficiaries and independent experts.
- Manage the European Commission’s Research Enquiry Service, which answers questions from grant applicants, EU-funded researchers and the public.
- Support independent experts evaluating project proposals competing for EU research funds.
- Assist with the legal and financial validation of all European Union programme grants and procurement operations directly funded by the European Commission.
